25 Breeds Now Being Banned in Denmark.

January 2013 – “Denmark has one of the most strict dog breed bans in the world. 12 breeds were already banned and 13 more are lined up, making a total of 25 breeds to be banned in the near future.”The discussion in Denmark went totally out of hand. While reports surfaced that despite the current ban, the number of dog bites have increased and the ban is therefore not working, politicians and media ignored the facts and called for more breeds to be banned. When vets are reluctant to euthanize healthy animals just because they are part of breed, politicians called upon people to practice “do-it-yourself” euthanasia. This message was corrected, yet it shows the sentiment that is present in the country and the horror dogs and dog owners in Denmark are living in.”

“The problem with dogs is not dogs. It is people. And laws that continue to focus on dogs and not on the owners are destined to fail because they are targeting the wrong end of the leash. This has been true throughout the world — and study after study proves it.”

Animal Law Coalition And Other Great Links for Animal Rights

What Are Animal Rights?

The main idea behind the animal rights movement is that all animals should be treated  humanely and spared from pain, suffering or murder. These ideas started becoming popular in the 19th century, and today groups such as Peta,Animal Law Coalition and others maintain this focus.

How Animal Rights and Animal Welfare Differ?

These two groups have similar ideas, nonetheless animal welfare groups focus on animals being treated in a humane way.Animal Welfare  maintains its focus on an animal not suffering during production and slaughter for human consumption.Animal Rights supporters believe that there is no humane way to kill an animal.

Animal Rights Movement.

This movement dates back to the 19th century and thanks to the works of Arthur Schopenhauer and Henry Salt, an awareness toward living beings and animal issues was brought to light.

In the 1970’s Richard Ryder, an Oxford psychologist introduced the word ” speciesism” which is an assignment of different values to beings based on their species.

In 1975, Peter Singer wrote “Animal Liberation”- a reference book for activists-used at Princeton University-bioethics course.

2013 Felony Cruelty Legislation

” Our measure is narrowly crafted to make the worst types of cruelty to companion animals a felony — such as maliciously or intentionally burning, crushing, suffocating, impaling and dismembering animals — but all other types of cruelty still would be covered by the existing North Dakota statute. The measure is limited to dogs, cats and horses, so it does not have any impact on agriculture, hunting or other legal activities. If the legislature wants to follow up by strengthening other areas of the law in the future, they can do so with a simple majority vote.” North Dakotans to Stop Animal Cruelty.
