Kangal dogs are saving cheetahs from extinction. This breed is often known as a sheep dog, however Kangal dogs or Anatolian dogs are not herding dogs but are used as flocking ,guardian dogs to protect cattle and fend off wolves, bears and jackals.

National breed of Turkey

Independent thinker

Great with family and children

Weighs between 100-175 lbs fully grown

The Kangal is an early Mastiff type of dog with a solid, pale tan or sabled coat and black mask.

Not as heavy as the Mastiff but just as handsome  and can reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour.

The Kangal has an under-layer of fur that provides insulation against the cold Anatolian winters and the scorching summer sun.The coat allows for the Kangal to regulate body temperature more efficiently, nonetheless its coat is thick enough to sustain ruptures from wolf, cheetah and other predator bites. The coat is short and thick and all Kangal dogs have a black, mastiff like facial mask and black or shady ears.

Sometimes the ears are cropped for protection against tearing from predators. It is also thought that cropping of the ears enhances hearing because sound can travel easily into the ears.

Kangals are used as sheep dogs but today are being used in Namibia to work together with cheetahs and the puppies are raised with Namibian livestock, so as to protect the cattle from cheetahs.

More than 300 Kangals have been given to farmers in Namibia(Dog Project)(Farm Management Project) since 1994 by the Cheetah Conservation Fund(CCF). During this time the number of cheetahs killed by Namibian farmers has dropped from 19 per farmer to 2.4.The 80% decrease in livestock losses, since the adoption of these Kangals ,have helped farmers and cheetahs live together in Namibia. Laurie Marker attributes the Kangals for saving cheetahs from extinction.

When alerted the Kangal will  stand with ears and tail erect and give a protective bark, gathering all the sheep together around it for protection.

The Kangal will first place itself between the predator and the sheep. When the sheep are behind it, the Kangal will confront the intruder. Sometimes it will intimidate the predator, however it will resort to a physical confrontation if the predator stands its ground.

Thanks to the Kangal , The Farm Management Program and Dog Project, the cheetahs’ mortality rate  in Namibia has decreased .
