MOSCOW WATER DOG-VODOLAZ-EXTINCT BREEDS.

EXTINCT DOG BREEDS-  MOSCOW WATER DOG. VODOLAZ

Breed Names:

Russian Newfoundland, Moscow Water Dog, Moscow Diver, Moscow Retriever, Moskovsky Vodolaz, Moscow Vodolaz, Moscow River Dog, Vodolaz

This  now extinct breed was developed in Russia in the 1950’s and 1960’s.

It was a Russian dog breed and was initially bred by the Russian army’s dog breeders in order to create a working dog for water rescue.

This dog is remembered because of its involvement in the development of another Russian dog breed-the Black Russian Terrier.

History

After WW11  a few dogs were brought in from Germany to the Russian army’s ‘Red Star’ kennels.

They were then cross bred with Causasian dogs and then with the Russian German shepherd.

Temperament

These dogs bit sailors instead of rescuing them. They were about 26 inches in height and much more aggressive than the Newfoundland. The Russians then created the Russian Newfoundland-Moskovsky Vodolov or Moscow Vodolov.

In the 1960’s the Russians commercialized the Russian Newfoundland.

By the middle of the 1980’s ‘Russia’s Water Dog’ could not be distinguished from the Newfoundland. It was then that it was considered to be an extinct breed.
