Two dogs that were trained to walk into an MRI scanner and stay still have revealed the first images of actual canine thought processes.

Prof.Berns of Emory University, Atlanta is the lead researcher of the dog project and says that the results indicate that dogs pay very close attention to human signals-and that these signals may have a direct line to the dog’s reward system.

‘The dog’s brain represents something special about how humans and animals come together. It’s possible that dogs have even affected human evolution. People who took dogs into their homes and villages may have had certain advantages. As much as we made dogs, I think dogs made some part of us ,too.’

Callie is a two-year-old Feist who was adopted from a shelter at nine months. McKenzie is a three old Border Collie, who competes in agility competitions. Both dogs were still while the MRI measured their neural activity.

Experiment One.

Both dogs were trained to respond to hand signals.

First signal indicated that the dog would receive a hot dog treat.

Second signal indicated that the dog would not get a hot dog treat.

Results: The caudate region of the brain, which is associated with rewards in humans, showed activation with both dogs when they saw the signal for treat and no activation when they saw the no-treat signal.
